  • The Canine Good Neighbour Program is a 12-step test, that when completed successfully, will ensure that one of our most favoured companions, the dog, is accepted as a valued member of our communities right across the country. Canine Good Neighbours can be counted on to present good manners at home, in public places and in the presence of other dogs.

The test is non-competitive and allows the dog and handler to demonstrate confidence and control in 12 steps. It assesses the handler and dog's relationship, together with the handler's ability to control the dog. Dogs are evaluated on their ability to perform basic exercises as well as their ability to demonstrate good manners in everyday situations.

The training program embraces both purebred and mixed-breed dogs and is fun, rewarding, and useful. It encourages owners to have a better and richer relationship with their dogs. The program also enhances community awareness of responsible dog ownership and the numerous benefits associated with dog ownership.

  • CAPDT was created to give dog obedience trainers a network of fellow professionals — to provide a forum where dog trainers can be educated, exchange and generate ideas and network with their colleagues.

In 1993, a very small group of dog trainers gathered to discuss the feasibility of forming an Association. By mid-1994, an Executive was in place, a mandate was drawn up, by-laws to facilitate the running of day-to-day business of the Association were hammered out and a Code of Ethics for members was voted on and passed by the existing membership. By the end of 1997, the Association boasted a membership of almost 300 and continued to grow.

We want to further the concept of dog-friendly and humane training techniques across Canada. We endeavour to provide links to educational opportunities, peer networking, and give trainers a space for event advertising of the highest quality.

  • The L.E.G.S.® Applied Ethology certificate course for dog training is designed to provide trainers with a comprehensive understanding of dog behavior. It aims to challenge the traditional approach to dog behavior and teaches a new perspective that focuses on understanding the underlying causes of behavior rather than just changing or fixing them. The course is designed to fill the gaps in the understanding of dog behavior and provide a more complete and thorough understanding of the living world.

Kim Brophey, the course instructor, explains how this course is the first of its kind to unlock the "why" behind dog behavior and how this knowledge will make a significant difference in the work of dog trainers and behaviorists.
